Raised of $1,500,000 Goal
Lachie was a few weeks shy of his 6th bday in July, when he had a number of vomiting episodes. After 2 GP visits it was thought to be mild concussion. The vomiting continued. Having awesome mum intuition, Michelle knew something wasn’t right & took Lachlan to the Women’s & Children’s. After 5hrs waiting, the dr. on duty agreed -likely concussion. A CT scan was suggested before heading home to rule out other reasons.4 days later the top neurosurgeons at the WCH removed a brain tumour discovered on the scan. Lachie slowly recovered from surgery (balance & double vision-key problems afterwards). Hopefully the worse was over. Post surgery pathology showed the tumour mass was a medulloblastoma, a fast-growing, high-grade cancerous tumour. These tumours have a tendancy to drop into spinal fluid, fingers crossed this wouldn’t be. Unfortunately, a lumbar puncture revealed that Lachie did have microscopic cancer cells in his spinal fluid, increasing his risk from ‘average’ to ‘high.’ His family were devastated. What next?Lachie was able join a clinical trial for high risk Meduloblastoma, headed up in the USA. The treatment risks were high, Lachie’s parents, Ben & Michelle decided to join the trial hoping to give Lachie the best chance to rid any remaining cancer.9 Aug 17, a week after his 6th bday, he started 6wks of daily chemo & radiotherapy (yes - daily!), over 2 hospitals each day (part 1 of treatment). So tough! By week 4 Lachie had lost his hair, his appetite, lost weight (required a feeding tube), continued double vision, takes countless medications, radio burns & pains & vomiting. He’s missing out on being a normal 6yr old boy. Part 2 will be a 6wk recovery, then monthly maintenance chemo for a min. 6mths. So much a little boy!Everyone has given the Field family so much support - they are so grateful. They'd love to find a cure & better treatments. Lets walk together, raise some money, wear Star Wars gear - Lachie loves Star Wars!
